On Thursday, December 27, 2007, Robert Stubbs left work a little early to
try and get a shot at an eight point that he had a trail camera picture
of. He told the Bragging Post, "I got in the my box stand by
4:00, around 5:00 p.m. does started filtering into the field. Just when
it was getting to the point of no shooting light, a buck eased out into
the far corner of field. I put my binoculars on him and could not figure
out what kind of horns I was looking at.
I knew the antlers were dark, but there was something wrong about what was
between his ears. I lined the crosshairs of my trusty Browning a-bolt
30-06 and squezzed the trigger. The field was quickly empty of all deer.
I had left my flash light in the truck, so I hurried down to where the
buck was standing when I shot at him. It was too dark to see blood, and
he was not in the weeds that surround the field.
Walked out to my truck and found that the flashlight batteries were dead.
Drove home to get fresh batteries and get my son Jordan to go help me look
for the buck. Found no blood, I followed the trails which the deer use to
enter field back toward their bedding area. He did not go over 50 yards.
Called Jordan to bring 4 wheeler over. While we were looking at the weird
set of horns, I noticed that he only had three legs. Not sure if was born
with three legs, hit my car or shot when he was younger. The leg was gone
at the second joint above the hoof and you can notice, completely healed."
