Morris Champagne of Luling, La. shot
this antelope during the September Antelope season on Hightower Ranch
outside of Carrizozo New Mexico. The buck was spotted while glassing a
valley from approximately 1/2 mile away. The buck was with 12 does at the
time. After a 1 hour down-wind stalk over the top of a ridge, the cover
of Juniper trees ran out and the shot was made at ~375 yards with a 7mm
Rem mag. The buck was hit, but he still tried to run up the hill on the
opposite side of the valley. Fortunately, he couldn't make it up due to
the injury. He turned and started traveling a horizontal route along the
ridge. With binoculars, he could be seen bleeding down the front leg but
was obviously not hit in the vitals. Several follow-up shots were made at
a range of 500+ yards (the range finder couldn't pick up over 500 for some
reason) before he was finally brought down. He was roughly scored at 75
B&C.
