This Copiah County 8 point was taken the
1st or 2nd week in January, 2005, by Rae Oberschmidt of Brookhaven, MS. and
has quite an unusual and interesting story. One that Rae and many of
us will never forget. Rae spotted the deer between 2 scrapes eating acorns around 5 p.m. and shot "it". He and a relative hunting with him had to cross a creek and 2 steep banks to get the deer out. So, it was about 8:30 before he was home with the deer. Rae and his wife have recently adopted 2 sisters into their family (another interesting story) and life around his home is very busy. Tired and cold, it was 9:30 before he was able to dress the deer. Rae had noticed that the antlers had a lot of tree shavings on it from being rubbed on trees, but had paid a lot of attention to the deer's body prior to this. When he gutted "it", 2 softball size fetuses fell out. Much to his amazement, he began investigating further. The deer had "all male and female" body organs, even the birth canal. He phoned a neighbor to come over. The neighbor was astonished as well. The deer had a sunken area on the head between the antlers and eyes. Also, the deer's spine was not exactly where it should have been (sorry, I didn't understand all that to elaborate further). Due to his being tired and the late hour, Rae regretfully had not thought to take pictures or keep any of the body "parts" for a game biologist. He has only his memory and the eye witness. Another unique thing, Rae killed an 8 point "doe" two years ago about 1/4 mile from where he killed this deer. Rae hunts West of I 55 near Bayou Pierre. |
